Pancake Trends & Recipes for 2023

Here at Brunch In The UK, it’s safe to say: we love our classic Breakfast and Brunch staples. From sweet to savoury, from massive meals to minimalist plates, we have a real soft spot (literally, from all the eating) for dishes you’ll find on most menus. And what’s one of the most delicious and exemplary Brunch items in existence? Pancakes.

Whether you call them hotcakes, Dutch Babies or even crepes (controversial, but we’ll let it slide), we adore all pancakes here at Brunch in the UK. Naturally, as some of the greatest Pancake Connoisseurs in the country, we wanted to examine the top trends for Pancakes in 2023! So sit back with your stack and get chewing on these 5 Pancake Trends for 2023.

1. Pancake Tacos With Syrup Salsa

One of our favourite pancake trends for 2023 is Pancake Tacos, which are exactly what they say on the tin (or the bag of flour, as such). For those who love the construction of a taco but wish they were a little sweeter, Pancake Tacos are the dish for you!

Innovative pancake lovers all over the UK have gotten into Pancake Tacos in a big way, and you can even find them on some restaurant meus now. If you’re looking to try this trend at home, simply fry up some pancakes using your go-to recipe – but make them a little smaller and thinner than usual. Then fill them with your toppings of choice: butter, syrup, fruit, Nutella, powdered sugar or whatever else you like!

Make sure to check out the #pancaketacos hashtag on TikTok for further inspiration, or search ‘pancake tacos london’ on TikTok to find even more delicious Mexican-style pancakes.

2. His Palms Are Sweaty, Pancake Spaghetti

This may be a slight misquote, but we really aren’t making Pancake Spaghetti up! (If only this dish were topped with Eminems – get it?)

October 2022 was a chaotic time for us in the UK. It took us from the resignation of the shortest serving Prime Minister in UK history… to Pancake Spaghetti. A creation from TikToker Briana Archuleta’s husband, #pancakespaghetti quickly took TikTok by storm.

Pancake Spaghetti now has over 18.3 million views in TikTok, so it appears this trend is here to stay. One of our new favourite TikTok recipes has taken this concept to the next level with an Oreo inspired recipe.

@thejoshelkinOreo Pancake Spaghetti should be your next dessert for breakfast. Recipe below (serves 4) INGREDIENTS 2 cups all purpose flour 2 tbsp baking powder 1 tbsp sugar 10 crushed Oreos (saving 1/3 for garnish) 1 1/4 cups of milk 1 egg 3 tbsp melted butter Maple Syrup Step 1 Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the wet ingredients. Step 2 Add the wet to the dry to form the batter and then transfer to a squeeze bottle. Step 3 Add the pancake batter in a spiral shape to a medium skillet and cook for about 3 minutes Step 4 Add to a bowl with maple syrup and garnish with the remaining crushed Oreos♬ original sound – Josh Elkin

3. Pour Yourself a Bowl of Pancake Cereal

If Pancake Spaghetti wasn’t quite enough to make you raise an eyebrow, how about Pancake Cereal? That’s right – we heard you like breakfast, so we put breakfast in your breakfast so you can have more breakfast (and so on).

Initially, this was a 2020 TikTok trend. But even with most of us having significantly less spare time than we had during the Pandemic, it has continued to grow in popularity. #pancakecereal has now amassed over 1.7 billion views on TikTok.

For the ultimate 2020 throwback, serve up your Pancake Cereal with a Dalgona Whipped Coffee! The sugar might put you in a coma, but you’ll have one hell of a good time.

4. Remember Your Air Fryer? Discover American-Style Air Fryer Pancakes

Air Fryer Pancakes were a 2022 TikTok trend, and their popularity has started to boom again in 2023. Needless to say, this trend is the perfect opportunity for those of you who were awkwardly gifted an Air Fryer this Christmas and have not yet ‘found the time’ to use it!

Check out our favourite Air Fryer recipe here. Just make sure to use Buttermilk rather than regular milk to get that highly-sought after fluffy texture.

5. Vegan Pancakes Are Not Just for January

Vegan Pancakes are one iconic TikTok recipe that’s here to stay – yes, even beyond Veganuary, during which their popularity peaks (and probably converts a number of pancake-loving non-vegans to the lifestyle!).

While most Vegan Pancake recipes you come across have an American fluffy-flair to them, we’ve enjoyed adapting the Pancake recipes that we know and love from our childhoods. On that note, we’d highly recommend A Virtual Vegan for a classic British-inspired Vegan Pancake Recipe.

6. The Unforgivable Atrocity of Baked Bean Pancakes

We’re sorry to end this list with something that makes you want to claw your eyes out and renounce brunch food forever – but if we had to see it, so do you.

True, there’s a time and place for baked beans, especially in the UK. But that place is most certainly not on top of a poor, innocent pancake.

Eggs we understand completely. Bacon too. Cumberland sausage, even. But baked beans on a pancake? Straight to jail.

Nonetheless, this is one trend that’s persisting into 2023 – just take a look at Stack & Still’s popular pancake menu. While they say you shouldn’t knock it until you try it, we’d much prefer the Falafel Stack or the Chipotle Pulled Pork Stack… anything but the beans.

We hope you’ll forgive us for making you aware of this atrocity. If you want to take your mind off it, why not check out our top picks for Pancakes in London or Manchester? Only good pancakes on those lists – we promise.
